FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I deal with a Warranty issue?

As you may be aware all warranty claims lie with the shop from where the item was bought therefore our first suggestion would be to contact the shop directly about any warranty issues. They will be able to advise you how to return it to them to look at it under warranty. This also includes mail order and internet companies.

How do I wash my Altura Clothing?

Follow the instructions displayed on the garment care label inside every product. The instructions on the garment always supersede the instructions on a cleaning product.

As a general rule DO NOT use fabric softeners and DO NOT tumble dry. If using a washing machine you should only wash at 30 degrees C and use Non Biologic detergent.

All Altura garments are made from technical fabrics with specific properties to enhance comfort and performance while riding. Garments must be washed regularly in line with the specific washing instructions to ensure the technical fabrics continue to function at a high level.
The frequency of washing varies greatly dependant on type of use, conditions and personal preference. Don't be afraid to wash technical clothing, provided washing instructions are followed washing will enhance performance.

Commuter on a daily basis = wash it weekly

Occasional user = wash monthly

(Low impact use)

Heavy use = wash after each use
(High impact use)

Full washing instructions can be found on all garments.
Altura shorts and tights with padded inserts have antibacterial properties but we still advise that these should be washed after every use. Avoid biological detergents and ensure garments are not left wet for long periods as this can affect the performance of the insert.

Please note that if you are using biological washing powders in your washing machine it is advisable to rinse the machine before washing technical clothing.

How should I look after my waterproof jacket?

Waterproof jackets should be washed regularly using a technical specialist product. A technical proofer should be used intermittently to enhance the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating and prevent wetting out.

Do Altura products come with a guarantee/warranty?

All Altura products come with a minimum 2 year warranty. This warranty covers manufacturing defects but does not cover wear and tear.

If you have an issue with an Altura product you should take it back to the point of purchase for the retailer to inspect.

Are Altura waterproof jackets breathable?

All Altura waterproof jackets are waterproof, windproof and breathable. This breathability varies between items. The amount of breathability is dependent on the type of activity the jacket is designed for.

Product breathability ratings are available for all waterproofs on our website. Fabrics are tested using JIS B-1 standard test method.
The breathability of a fabric is also affected by the following;

• Garment Care. Dirt:- Oil, sweat and everyday contaminates picked up from general use affect the function of a waterproof, breathable fabric. Fabrics must be washed regularly, ideally with a specific cleaner. Biological washing detergents must NOT be used. Full washing instructions can be found on garments.

• DWR:- Most waterproof fabrics feature an external treatment known as a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) which beads the water on the outside of fabric, letting it run off. Fabrics lose the DWR over time meaning the water soaks in to the outer layer of the fabric. This is called "wetting out". Wetting out reduces breathability, comfort and performance with fabrics feeling wet and cold to the touch. When this occurs garments should be treated with a proofer. This treatment reapplies the DWR ensuring the fabric functions as new.

• Temperature variance between inside and outside the fabric. A greater variance (i.e. cold weather) increases the breathability and conversely breathability will be lower in warmer weather conditions.

Two further points to consider are;

• Intensity of effort. Bodies react differently to the amount of physical effort you are expending and some people sweat more than others. When working at a very high effort level e.g. on a fast climb your body will create more heat and sweat than when riding at a moderate pace. No waterproof fabric will keep you 100% dry inside all the time riding at varied levels of effort. To maximise comfort wear the correct layers to help regulate internal body temperature for the given conditions and type of riding planned.

• Clothing worn under the jacket. Technical base and mid layers are generally made from "wicking" fabrics to ensure moisture is taken from the skin to the inside of the jacket. If any layer worn under the jacket does not have wicking properties (e.g. a cotton t-shirt) sweat will not pass through and this will hold the moisture becoming damp and uncomfortable.
